about us
The Sharing Shelf Food Hub CIC is a grassroots community organisation based at St Mark’s Church in Millfield, Sunderland. We exist to support local people who are facing hardship by providing emergency food, everyday essentials and creative wellbeing activities in a warm and welcoming space. Everything we do is grounded in kindness, dignity and a belief in the power of community to change lives.
We were set up in response to the growing number of individuals and families in our area struggling to afford the basics. Whether people are facing short-term crisis or long-standing difficulties, we offer a vital lifeline through practical support. Our food hub provides nutritious food parcels, toiletries and household goods to anyone in need, with no judgement and no unnecessary barriers. We make sure people feel listened to, respected and supported the moment they walk through the door.
But our work goes beyond meeting immediate needs. At The Sharing Shelf, we understand that hardship can often go hand in hand with stress, isolation and declining mental health. That’s why we offer creative craft activities alongside our core support. These sessions provide a chance for people to relax, express themselves and connect with others in a calm, positive environment. From simple crafts and seasonal makes to hands-on workshops and group projects, our activities are designed to support mental wellbeing and help people rebuild confidence, routine and self-worth.
We are proud to be based at the heart of the Millfield community. St Mark’s Church provides not only a physical home for our work, but a sense of belonging and shared purpose that strengthens everything we do. We work closely with local partners including schools, housing associations, support workers and community groups to make sure help reaches those who need it most. We also accept referrals and direct approaches from individuals and families who find themselves struggling and unsure where to turn.
Our team of volunteers is central to our mission. They bring compassion, lived experience and local knowledge to every interaction, and their dedication helps create a space where people feel safe, encouraged and uplifted. From preparing food parcels to making cups of tea, offering a listening ear or helping someone take part in a craft activity, our volunteers show every day what community care looks like in action.
The Sharing Shelf is more than a food hub. It is a space of solidarity and hope. We believe that access to food, friendship and creativity are essential to a good life, and we work to remove stigma, reduce loneliness and create opportunities forz people to grow and thrive. Every item donated, every parcel packed and every conversation shared is part of something bigger — a kinder, more connected future for our community.
We are committed to continuing this work for as long as people need it. With the support of our volunteers, partners and local residents, we are building something meaningful that offers not just short-term relief, but long-term hope.
